Great Inventions Through the Ages

Throughout history, clever inventions have changed the way humans live. Some happened thousands of years ago, while others are so recent that your grandparents remember a world without them. An invention is a brand-new idea or device; a discovery is finding out something that was already there, like a new planet.

Interestingly, the wheel was first used not for carts but for shaping pottery, spinning round as a potter's wheel. Only later did someone have the brilliant idea of turning it on its side, adding an axle, and using it to move heavy loads. Great inventions often start by being used for something unexpected.

Writing was another world-changing invention. It first appeared in Mesopotamia around 3200 BCE as wedge-shaped marks called cuneiform, pressed into wet clay. Writing let people record information — laws, stories, and trades — and pass it on to future generations instead of relying only on memory.

In the 1870s Thomas Edison developed a practical electric light bulb. Edison failed thousands of times before he found a material that would glow for hours without burning out. He famously said he had not failed, but simply found thousands of ways that would not work. Combined with electrical power stations, the light bulb transformed cities — people could now work, read, and play safely after dark.

The pace of invention has sped up enormously. It took thousands of years to go from the wheel to writing, but only a single lifetime to go from the first powered aeroplane flight in 1903 to landing astronauts on the Moon in 1969. Today, computers and the internet connect billions of people in an instant.
