The Industrial Revolution

The Industrial Revolution began in Britain in the mid-1700s and changed the world more rapidly than almost any other event in history. It was the shift from making goods by hand at home to making them in factories using machines powered by steam. The word 'revolution' here does not mean a fight — it means a huge, fast change in how people lived.

Steam engines worked by burning coal to boil water. The steam pushed a piston back and forth, and that movement could turn wheels and drive machines. For the first time, factories no longer had to be built beside rivers to use water power — they could be built anywhere there was coal.

Before the Industrial Revolution, most people lived in the countryside and farmed, and they made cloth slowly at home on spinning wheels. Afterwards, millions moved to towns and cities to work in factories full of fast machines. Cities like Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow grew at an astonishing speed.

Over time, brave reformers helped change things for the better. New laws called Factory Acts limited how many hours children could work and later made school compulsory. Workers also joined together in groups called trade unions to ask for fairer pay and safer conditions.

The revolution spread from Britain to Europe, North America, and beyond. It created enormous wealth and many new products, but also great inequality. The gap between rich factory owners and poor workers was very wide, and crowded, smoky cities could be unhealthy places to live.
