The Renaissance was a great burst of creativity and learning that began in Italy around 1350 CE and spread across Europe over the next 250 years . Its name means 'rebirth' in French — people rediscovered the ideas of ancient Greece and Rome and built upon them.
Why did it begin in Italy ? Wealthy trading cities like Florence and Venice had money to spare , and rich families like the Medici paid artists and thinkers to create beautiful works . These supporters were called patrons , and without them many great masterpieces would never have been made.
✨ Leonardo da Vinci was perhaps the greatest Renaissance genius . He was a brilliant painter , sculptor , architect , musician , mathematician , engineer , and inventor — all at the same time !
Renaissance artists learned to show perspective — the trick of making flat paintings look three-dimensional , with things further away drawn smaller . They also studied real human bodies carefully to make their art look lifelike . Compared with the flat pictures of the Middle Ages , Renaissance art looked amazingly real .

💡 The printing press , developed by Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 CE, meant books could be made quickly and cheaply — ideas spread across Europe faster than ever before.
📷 Aodhdubh at English Wikipedia · CC BY 2.5Before the printing press , every book had to be copied out by hand , which took months and made books rare and expensive . Gutenberg's machine could print many pages quickly . Suddenly more people could own books , learn to read , and share new ideas — this helped power the whole Renaissance .

The Renaissance was not just about art. Scientists like Galileo Galilei dared to challenge old ideas . Using a telescope , Galileo gathered evidence that the Earth moves around the Sun, not the other way around. This was a daring claim , because most people at the time believed the Earth was the centre of everything .
