The Vikings: Explorers of the North

The Vikings came from Scandinavia — the lands we now call Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Between about 800 and 1100 CE, they were among the most skilled sailors and warriors in the world. The word 'Viking' may come from an old word meaning to go raiding or exploring by sea.

The longship was the secret of Viking success. It was long and narrow with a shallow bottom, so it could glide right up onto a beach. It had a big square sail for windy days and rows of oars for calm ones. A carved dragon's head at the front was meant to frighten enemies and scare away evil spirits.

Vikings were not only raiders — they were also great traders and explorers. They reached Iceland, Greenland, and even North America, nearly 500 years before Columbus. They traded furs, amber, and walrus ivory, travelling as far as the markets of the Middle East.

Here is a surprise: Vikings did NOT wear horned helmets! That idea was invented by artists much later. Real Viking helmets were simple rounded caps of iron or leather. Horns would have been useless and dangerous in a real battle.

Viking society was organised into jarls (nobles), karls (free farmers), and thralls (enslaved people). Most Vikings were actually farmers who grew crops and kept animals. They worshipped gods like Odin, Thor, and Freya, and told exciting stories called sagas that were passed down by heart for generations.
