Ancient China: Dynasties and Inventions

China has one of the longest continuous civilisations on Earth, stretching back over 4,000 years. It was ruled by a series of families called dynasties, each with its own emperors. When one ruling family grew weak, another would take over and a new dynasty would begin.

The Chinese believed their emperor ruled with the blessing of heaven, an idea they called the 'Mandate of Heaven'. If an emperor was wise and fair, heaven was happy. But if floods, famines, or defeats struck, people thought heaven had withdrawn its blessing — and that it was time for a new dynasty.

Ancient China was an astonishing place for invention. The Chinese invented paper, printing, gunpowder, the compass, and silk — all hundreds of years before these ideas reached Europe. These four inventions — paper, printing, gunpowder, and the compass — are sometimes called the 'Four Great Inventions' of ancient China.

Silk is made from the cocoons of silkworms, which feed on mulberry leaves. The Chinese kept this method a tightly guarded secret for hundreds of years. Along the Silk Road, traders carried not just silk but also new foods, ideas, and even religions between China, India, the Middle East, and Europe.

The teachings of Confucius, a great Chinese thinker who lived around 500 BCE, shaped Chinese society for centuries. He taught the importance of respect, education, and treating others with kindness. One of his most famous ideas was: do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.
