Black Holes and Deep Space

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so incredibly hard that nothing can escape it — not even light. That is why it looks completely black. A black hole is not really a 'hole' at all; it is a huge amount of matter squeezed into a tiny space, creating gravity beyond anything we experience on Earth.

To understand black holes, it helps to think about 'escape velocity' — the speed something needs to travel to break free of a world's gravity. On Earth that speed is about 11 kilometres per second. On a black hole, the escape velocity is faster than the speed of light. Since nothing can travel faster than light, nothing can ever get out.

The edge of a black hole is called the event horizon. It is the point of no return: cross it, and you can never come back. The event horizon is not a solid surface — it is simply the boundary where gravity becomes too strong to escape. Outside it, you could still fly away; inside it, every path leads deeper in.

There are different sizes of black hole. 'Stellar' black holes form when single big stars collapse and are a few times heavier than our Sun. 'Supermassive' black holes sit at the centres of galaxies and can be millions or even billions of times heavier than the Sun. Scientists are still working out exactly how the giant ones grew so large.

Because not even light comes out, we cannot see a black hole directly. Scientists spot them by watching how nearby stars and gas swirl around them. As gas falls towards a black hole it spins into a flat, glowing ring called an accretion disc, heating up and blazing with X-rays we can detect from Earth.

Black holes also stretch time. Albert Einstein showed that strong gravity makes time run more slowly. Near a black hole's event horizon, time would crawl compared with clocks far away. These strange effects are why black holes fascinate scientists — they push our understanding of space and time to the very limit.
