Reading for Meaning

Reading for meaning is more than just saying the words aloud — it is about understanding them. You might be able to read every word of a page and still not grasp what it is telling you. Skilled readers are active: they ask themselves questions as they read, such as 'What is this mostly about?', 'Why did the character do that?', and 'How does this make me feel?'

It helps to tell the difference between the main idea and the supporting details. Imagine a paragraph about dogs. The main idea might be 'dogs make wonderful pets'. The supporting details are the reasons: they are loyal, they are playful, and they help us feel less lonely. The details all point back to that one big idea.

Sometimes a text does not say something directly — you have to work it out from the clues. This is called inferring, or 'reading between the lines'. If a story says 'Maya pulled her coat tighter and stared at the grey sky', you can infer that it is cold and perhaps about to rain, even though the words 'cold' and 'rain' never appear.

Inferring works by adding two things together: the clues in the text plus what you already know about the world. The text says Maya tightened her coat; you know people do that when they are chilly; so you infer she is cold. Detectives infer in just the same way, gathering clues to work out what really happened.

Vocabulary is a huge part of reading for meaning. When you meet an unknown word, try these steps: read the whole sentence again, look for clues in the words around it (context clues), and think about whether the word has a prefix or root you recognise. Only reach for a dictionary if the clues do not help — often you can work the word out yourself.
