The Parts of Speech

Every word in a sentence has a job to do. We call these jobs 'parts of speech'.

The most common parts of speech are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.

**Nouns** A noun is a word for a person, place, or thing. Examples: 'girl', 'school', 'book'.

**Verbs** A verb is a word for an action or a state of being. Examples: 'run', 'is', 'feel'.

**Adjectives** An adjective describes a noun. Examples: 'happy', 'big', 'red'.

**Adverbs** An adverb describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Examples: 'slowly', 'very', 'always'.
