Famous Artists

Throughout history, a handful of artists have invented entirely new ways of seeing and showing the world. Their paintings still astonish visitors in museums hundreds of years after they were made. Studying these artists is not just about memorising names and dates — it is about understanding how each one solved a problem, broke a rule, or captured a feeling that nobody had managed to capture before.

Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) was not only a painter but also a scientist, engineer, and inventor. He studied human anatomy by dissecting bodies so he could paint people as accurately as possible. His most famous painting, the Mona Lisa, is remarkable for her mysterious, almost-smiling expression and for the way Leonardo used sfumato — a smokily blended shading technique — to make her look like a real person and not a flat illustration. The Mona Lisa is the most visited painting in the world, kept behind bullet-proof glass in the Louvre museum in Paris.

Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) was Dutch but spent much of his life painting in France. He is famous for using thick, swirling brushstrokes that seem to show the energy and emotion he felt rather than just what his eye saw. In The Starry Night, the sky churns with spiralling clouds and shining stars — it is a deeply felt vision, not a photograph. Despite creating over 900 paintings, van Gogh sold only one painting during his lifetime. Today his work sells for hundreds of millions of pounds.

Claude Monet (1840–1926) helped start the Impressionist movement in France. He was fascinated by how natural light changes from hour to hour and painted the same scene many times at different times of day. His famous series of haystacks shows the same haystacks in morning light, noon sun, winter frost, and autumn haze. Later in life his eyesight began to fail, and yet he created his enormous, dreamy Water Lilies panels — now displayed across two large oval rooms at the Orangerie museum in Paris.

Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) was Mexican and developed a uniquely personal style that mixed the bright colours and symbols of Mexican folk art with the dreamlike imagery of surrealism. Many of her 55 self-portraits include symbols — a deer, a broken column, roots — that stand in for feelings of pain, strength, or identity. Her work was largely forgotten after her death but has become one of the most celebrated and recognisable in modern art.

Every artist you have just met faced challenges, criticism, or self-doubt at some point — and yet they kept making work. Leonardo filled notebooks constantly, even when his paintings were unfinished. Van Gogh wrote thousands of letters to his brother about how much he wanted to improve. Monet kept painting his pond even as his eyes weakened. Kahlo worked lying flat on her back when injuries kept her in bed. Their determination is as inspiring as the paintings themselves.
